Using Moringa To Up Milk Production

A little different from what I typically write about. Lately, I've been researching ways to up my milk production. My little zombambino (AKA: Warren) is milk crazy!! He has an 8oz breakfast and averages 7oz per feeding, and he is only 5 months old. I wish that I could do a diet of just breastmilk for him, but the milk factory can only provide about half his meals at full working capacity. But, perhaps moringa can change that?

I found some moringa! Specifically moringa leaf powder. Alright, so I've used this word a million times. What is moringa???

Basically, it's one of those supplements that there is insufficient research for but could be a superfood because of how much Daily Nutrition protein, vitamins, and minerals it contains. Now if you read the link above, it is from WebMD. You'll see that they do not recommend using moringa for breastfeeding purposes...because there isn't enough research. I do typically like to follow recommended medical advice. I also ate normal, cured hotdogs during my pregnancy. Therefore, my gameplan is to try out moringa for only a couple of months. It's not meant to be a long term supplement. Most people are advised to use it for about 6 months.

How are you using it?

I bought some moringa leaf powder for about $4 at my local international grocer (Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market). The day I bought it, I tried to make a green tea latte with it. I through in a heaping spoonful of the powder into some milk I had heated on the stove. I added honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Then I whisked it up with my frother. It was good..and gross.

I had put too much powder in.

The taste was very close to how matcha tastes just slightly bitter. And I enjoyed the added flavorings. But the powder did not mix all the way through so once I had drunk over half of it, every mouthful included a bunch of powder.

If you want to make a Moringa Latte. My advice is to only use 1 tsp.

I wanted to make sure I kept using the supplement, so I decided to incorporate it into my daily routine.

And so I created:

Moringa Coffee

I put 1 tsp of moringa leaf powder in my coffee between scoops (I make 4 cups of coffee every day, so 2 scoops) in my coffee machine.

Pro Tip: FLAVOR YOUR OWN COFFEE. Mix some cinnamon, ginger powder, allspice, and nutmeg into the coffee grounds. Add some vanilla extract to the coffee pod just before brewing for extra deliciousness.

Okay. Moringa Coffee. It tastes like coffee, with a hint of green tea. As if the tea was hiding behind a tree in a game of hide and seek just trying to tease the coffee about its location.

After one week of use, I have seen zero evidence that moringa has positively effected my milk production in any way. The only changes that seem to make an immediate difference the milk quantity are when I drink 8-12 cups of water or, to a lesser extent, when I've 'power pumped' a couple of times in a row.
